RV Rental for ArtPrize in Grandville, MI

RV rental for ArtPrize near Grandville

Every September, about two weeks before ArtPrize opens downtown, I start getting the same call: “We want to come up for the weekend but every hotel near the Grand River is already gone — what do we do?” My answer is always the same: let me deliver an RV to a campground within 20–30 minutes of the venues, and you’ll actually enjoy the trip instead of fighting for a parking spot and paying peak hotel rates. If you’re planning an RV rental for ArtPrize this year, here’s exactly how I’d set it up for you.

Why ArtPrize Is One of the Best Weeks to Have an RV in West Michigan

ArtPrize runs across multiple weeks in late September and into October, spread across dozens of venues throughout downtown Grand Rapids — the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the DeVos Place convention center, the BOB, venues along the Grand River walk, and more. The event draws enormous crowds from across the Midwest. Downtown hotel rooms book out fast, and when they do, rates climb steeply. Meanwhile, campgrounds south and west of the city — places like Hungry Horse Campground in Byron Center or Grand Rogue Campgrounds up in Comstock Park — have sites available at a fraction of that cost, and I can have a rig waiting for you when you arrive.

From Byron Center, you’re roughly 15–20 minutes to the heart of downtown via US-131 north. From Comstock Park, you’re practically on the doorstep — 10 minutes up US-131 to the Leonard Street exit and you’re walking distance from the river venues. That commute beats circling a parking garage for an hour, and you come back to your own space, your own kitchen, and your own bed instead of a cramped hotel room shared with the family.

Where I Deliver for ArtPrize Weekend Trips

I deliver and set up RVs across Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, and Muskegon counties — and for ArtPrize trips, these are the campgrounds I talk through with customers most often:

  • Grand Rogue Campgrounds – Comstock Park: This is my top recommendation for people who want to walk or take a short rideshare into downtown. It sits right along the Grand River, and the drive down US-131 into the ArtPrize core is genuinely quick. Sites here fill up fast for ArtPrize dates — call ahead.
  • Hungry Horse Campground – Byron Center: A solid choice if Grand Rogue is full. Byron Center is south of the city on US-131, and the drive north is straightforward. The campground is well-maintained and I know the layout — I can get a rig situated without much trouble.
  • Winding Creek RV Resort – Coopersville: If you want a quieter base west of the city, Coopersville off I-96 works well. It’s about 25–30 minutes to downtown, which is still very manageable for a day trip into the venues.
  • Millennium Park – Grandville/Grand Rapids: This is a Kent County park with RV camping near the Grandville/Grand Rapids border, convenient to M-6 and I-196. It puts you close to the city without being in the middle of the event traffic.
  • Holland State Park – Holland: If your group wants to pair ArtPrize with a Lake Michigan beach day, Holland is about 30 miles southwest on I-196. It’s a longer drive for the evening venues, but families often love having the lake right there, and Holland State Park is one of the best-run parks in the state system.

RV Parking in Downtown Grand Rapids During ArtPrize

I get asked about this constantly, so I want to be straight with you: driving a full-size motorhome or towing a travel trailer into downtown Grand Rapids during ArtPrize is not something I’d recommend. The streets near the river venues — Monroe Center, Fulton Street, the area around the GRAM — are congested under normal conditions. During ArtPrize, foot traffic is heavy and parking structures aren’t designed for large rigs. My honest advice is to base the RV at a campground and drive a personal vehicle, take a rideshare, or use the Dash shuttle into downtown. That’s the approach that actually works.

What September–October Weather Means for Your RV Trip

Late September in West Michigan is genuinely beautiful — one of my favorite times of year to have people out in rigs. Daytime temperatures are typically in the low-to-mid 60s, evenings can drop into the upper 40s, especially by early October. The campgrounds aren’t sweltering like July, the fall color along the Grand River corridor is starting to come in, and you don’t need to run the A/C all night. That said, I always make sure customers know to expect chilly mornings and to ask about the heater setup in whatever unit they’re renting. Contact us directly and I’ll walk you through what’s right for the conditions that week.

How Delivery Works for an ArtPrize Camper Rental

This is the part that makes the whole thing easy: you don’t tow anything, you don’t rent a truck, you don’t figure out how to back into a campsite at 9 PM after a long drive. I deliver the RV to your campground before you arrive, get it level, hooked up to power and water where hookups are available, and walk you through everything when you get there. At the end of your stay, I come pick it up. You just show up with your bags and food.

I operate out of Grandville — which puts me squarely between Grand Rogue to the north and Hungry Horse to the south, so delivery turnaround is quick. For full details on how our delivery service works, visit our RV delivery page.

Which RV Works Best for an ArtPrize Weekend Trip?

That depends on your group size and how you want to use the space. A couple spending two or three nights needs something very different from a family of five staying the full event week. I’ll be honest with you about what fits your situation — I’d rather put you in the right rig than oversell you on something too big or too small. Reach out and tell me your group size, your dates, and which campground you’re eyeing, and I’ll tell you what I’d recommend from our current fleet. Specific amenities and inclusions vary by unit, so that’s always a conversation worth having before you book.

When Should You Book for ArtPrize?

As early as you can. I’m not saying that just to create urgency — ArtPrize brings in visitors from all over the Midwest, and campsite availability at the closer parks, especially Grand Rogue, tightens up quickly once the event dates are announced. My recommendation: lock in the campsite reservation first (especially if you want a site with full hookups), then call me to confirm the RV. I’ve had customers call in mid-August thinking they had plenty of time, only to find Grand Rogue fully booked for their preferred weekend. The earlier you move, the more options you have on both ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any towing experience to rent from Fireside?

No. Because we deliver and set everything up, you never hook up or tow a thing. That’s the whole point of our delivery model — it’s designed specifically for people who want the RV experience without the logistics of hauling a trailer across the state.

Is there RV camping right at the ArtPrize venues downtown?

No. ArtPrize venues are spread throughout downtown Grand Rapids — this is an urban art event, not a fairgrounds setup with on-site camping. The campgrounds I listed above are your best options, with Grand Rogue in Comstock Park being the closest to the action.

How far does Fireside deliver for ArtPrize trips?

I cover Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, and Muskegon counties routinely — that gets you from Grand Rogue in Comstock Park all the way down to Holland State Park, out to Winding Creek in Coopersville, or east to Whispering Waters in Moline. If you have a specific campground in mind, just ask and I’ll confirm whether we can reach it.

What’s the best way to get from the campground into downtown for the venues?

Personal vehicle plus a parking garage on the outer edge of downtown, or a rideshare directly to the river district. From Comstock Park, an Uber to the GRAM or the Grand River walk is a quick trip. During ArtPrize hours, foot traffic near the core venues makes rideshare drop-offs on Monroe or Fulton very convenient. I’d leave the RV at the campsite and keep it simple.

Can I extend my rental if I want to stay an extra night?

Sometimes, yes — it depends on the unit’s schedule. Call or text me and I’ll check. The earlier you know, the easier it is to make work.
